July, 1979 THE EIGHTH TRIBE Page 9 Eldridge Woodrow Bartay 1849 and died in Austin County, Texas in 1929. The children of this second marriage were: Anna, George, Andreas, Karl, and Lina. János Bartay had 10 children and died at New Wehdem on December 21, 1885 at the age of 57. One of János and Katalin Bartays four sons, Henry Bartay, was born in New Wehdem, Austin County, Texas on January 7, 1868, and he married Isabell Coufal in Brenham, Washington County, Texas on his 27th birthday. He assisted the Texas Rangers and United States Marshalls with law enforcement. Later retiring to his ranch and well drilling business, he became constable of the Nelsonville, Austin County, Texas precinct. The family moved to Belleville in 1923. Since the incorporation of that city in 1929 until 1942, he was the City Marshall until ill health caused him to retire. Among his interests were composing and performing music. He died there on January 21, 1944. Mrs. Bartay was born in nearby Shelby on March 29, 1875, and died in Brenham, Texas on October 24, 1964. The children of this marriage were: Roland, Raymond, Sadie, Le Roy, Gilbert, Norma, Eldridge Woodrotv and Nettie Bell. (Henry Bartay s first marriage was to Anna Jochits in Bellville, Texas on February 14, 1888. The only child born of this marriage was Edward George Bartay 1st.) Their seventh child, Eldridge Woodrow Bartay, was born in Nelsonville, Texas on February 16, 1910, and married Hazel Maye Williams, a Burleson County, Texas native, in Bellville on May 31, 1932. She was born on October 24, 1914 in Caldwell, Burleson County, Texas. Mr. Bartay was District Manager for the Houston Press, security officer for the Santa Fe Railroad during World War II, and later engaged in the automotive and trucking business. He also had an orchestra which performed in many parts of the state. The family moved to Caldwell, Texas in 1945 where he continued in the automotive and trucking business. They have two sons, a daughter, and five grandchildren.” o-o-o-o There are and were over two hundred descendants of John Bartay residing in Texap and in many States in the United States. The Bartay family is a member of the San Antonio Hungarian Association, 211% Broadway, San Antonio, Texas 78205. Last year Gary Kent Bartay was State Chairman for the first State-Wide Hungarian Picnic for all Hungarians and Hungarian organizations in Texas and the event was successfully held at Circle D Resort in Bastrop, Texas. Aside from completing his Master's Degree this summer, he has been attempting to gather information about other early Hungarian settlers in Texas. Also he has been attempting to find the origins of the town named Buda, Texas near Austin, Texas.
