Page 2 THE EIGHTH TRIBE January, 1979 DEDICATION This magazine is dedicated to the Eighth Tribe in America, descendants of the original Seven Magyar Tribes. Whatever their faith, their familiarity with their ancestral language, or their degree of Hungarian ancestry, we address ourselves to each of them. If this reading is your first acquaintance with “THE EIGHTH TRIBE”, we hope you find it informative and enjoyable and that in time you will become one of our regular subscriber. THE EDITOR’S CORNER More on , HUNGARIAN CULTURAL INSTITUTE The preservation of the American Hungarian Heritage The following statement was received from the Rt. Rev. Arpad George, president of the Hungarian Reformed Federation of America: “The Rt. Rev. Arpad George informs the Foutiadon that he will present a written proposal of the Foundation $ intent to purchase the Children’s Home buildings to the Board of Managers of the Bethlen Home. He suggested that a substantial amount of cash downpayment contained in the proposal would make it more impressive before the Board for serious consideration. If he receives from the Foundation a request for the support of the Eighth Tribe Foundation, he promises to present it to the Board of Directors of the HRFA at the next meeting.” Nothing worth accomplishing has ever been easily achieved. The Eighth Tribe Cultural Foundation will never he a reality unless every Hungarian-American makes a unified effort to support it. It cannot be a reality with 10’s of supporters, or 100’s — it will take thousands. After six months of useless debating, arguing, and creating ill-feelings we are back at square one, having gotten absolutely nowhere. If the proposition submitted by the Eighth Tribe Foundation to the September conference had been accepted, the former orphanage would be well on its way to becoming the Hungarian Cultural Institute. Whether we like it or not, we must accept the fact that the building cannot be turned over to anyone for nothing. The Hungarian Reformed Federation of America carries a large mortgage ($130,000.00) that must be paid. The laws of the state of Pennsylvania as well as those of the Federal government forbid cither the Bethlen Home or the H.R.F.A. to divert funds from their concerns to cover the expenses of the building. The Board of Directors of the H.R.F.A. has found the proposition submitted to them by the Rt. Rev. Dr. John Butosi, bishop of the Calvin Synod, unacceptable for lack of monetary base. We have received many inquiries about the workings of the Institute. As the administrator, I have asked Mr. J oseph Széplaki to serve as curator of the museum and library. Mr. Széplaki is professionaly qualified for the position. The staff will consist of second and third generation Hungarian-Americans who are concerned about their heritage. Their duties will be to publish the Eighth Tribe and other Hungarian publications — as well as to publicize the work of the Institute across the United States and Canada. Another important point I wish to emphasize again is that the Cultural Foundation is for the benefit of all Hungarian-Americans — not just reformed Hungarian-Americans. We have gained the support of both Catholic and Protestant clergy. We ask ail clergy and laymen to stand behind the Foundation and urge their membership to subscribe to the Eighth Tribe. We have stated many times that considerable THE EIGHTH TRIBE Editor ............................................................ Sándor E. Chomos Contributing Editors: ..........
