Page 8 THE EIGHTH TRIBE January, 1976 Book Review: NEW VOICES IN AMERICAN POETRY, 1975, N.Y.: Vantage Press; includes selections by Madeline Takacs Barboe (a contributor of prose and poetry previously to The Eighth Tribe, Calvin Synod Herald, etc.) This anthology comprises over 900 pages of inspirational, cultural, religious, historical, philosophical, and humanistic verse, just recently published, in limited edition. In consideration for one’s library collection, it has wide-ranging content on diverse subject-matter, within a gold-imprinted, hardcoverbound edition, having pictorial jacket of a placid outdoor scene. If desired, autographs and/or personal messages may be inscribed by the adove-mentioned contributor. Specific selections by Madeline Takacs Barboe have poignant meaning and rationale underlying each of the rhymed and unrhymed poetic contexts and are of interest to be briefly given as follows: “New Jersey, The Garden State” is rhymed verse that was inserted into the Congressional Record of May 20, 1975, through courtesy of The Honorable Edward J. Patten, who is New Jersey’s Congressman of the 15th Federal District in the United States House of Representatives, Washington, D. C. There are seven stanzas of this creative work which are educationally informative about New Jersey’s flag, its State designations (tree, bird, flower, etc.), its history, geography, sports, natural resources, cities, industries, first records, scientists, inventors, and other individuals’ contributions to New Jersey’s heritage and culture. (A point of interest, incidentally, is that music has been set to the first verse and work is in progress in completing correlation of the remainder and having it copyrighted separately, together with research notes as well as indexed information.) All in all, this is an instructive composition in poetic form, somewhat similar to a learning experience about New Jersey (which is one of the original thirteen colonies to ratify the Constitution of the United States), such that educators and other individuals interested in education might want to review with students (both younger or older), immigrants, ethnic groups, out-of-State vistors, etc. Basically, the author’s intent was to create interest and arouse curiosity about one’s environment within the State and nation during the Bicentennial and future periods, and such is evidenced by the writer’s background which comprises State teaching certification in social sciences and language arts as well a3 master’s degree in counseling. “In Defense of Fragility” is an unrhymed first poem, written some years ago as a tribute in behalf of a gentle, kind, and highly artistic friend, whose demise and memorial services were somewhat a reactive aftermath as a result from a felt sense of loss and untimeliness. “On Recollection of Influence” is also a memorial tribute to another great individual whose wisdom, intelligence, temperament, and philosophy were of such awe-inspiring merit to associates and friends in this not-so-perfect milieu, and whose death, too, left the bereft feeling in deep loss of one of the finest guiding lights of this world — the feeling of reverence is likened almost to that of the sense of discipleship. Of further interest, too, is that the invitation has been extended to the above-mentioned writer for contributory items in future anthologies and/or other written works. The limited edition, signed copies are obtainable c/o M. Takacs Barboe, P.0. Box 2244, Edison, N. J. 08817, at a total cost of $14, which includes postage, handling, personal message inscription, etc. Proceeds are to go to counseling, educational, religious, research, tutorial services.
