DeCosmo, MD ^KMVtAer Dear Families and Friends, It is with deep sadness this month that we mourn the loss of one of our most beloved residents, Mrs. Louise Saraceni. I first met and began caring for Louise more than ten years ago, and she and I were fond of saying that we came to Ligonier Gardens together when it opened for personal care in 2000. Indeed, as one of the Gardens' "original" residents, Louise was a friend to all who knew her and in several ways, fulfilled the role of caretaker herself: she sent cards and well wishes to our hospitalized residents, and she planned and ran our exercise class if Lisa, our Activities Coordinator, was unable to do so. Louise also set up for Rosary and helped with Masses held here at Ligonier Gardens, and it was she who selected the prayer you've seen in issues of The Messenger. Grandmother to seven and great-grandmother to fourteen, Mrs. Saraceni is survived by her son Dr. Gene Saraceni and his family of Greensburg, to whom we extend our sympathies. Louise's loving nature and generous spirit were sincerely appreciated by the staff and residents here; we will miss her deeply and remember her with great fondness. The mild weather lately has inspired the initial planning stages of this spring's Relay for Life. Ligonier Gardens will be honored to again participate in our community's annual walk to raise funds for cancer research. In recent years, our walkers have begun to include extended family of staff members and residents, and consequently, we were proud to be represented by two large teams last year. This year's Relay for Life will be held at Weller Field in Ligonier beginning Saturday, May 20th and ending Sunday, May 21s1. We strive to keep walkers on the track for the entire 24-hour duration; to us, this symbolizes our awareness that we cannot afford to rest in the battle against the disease and that its victims will never be forgotten. Each year during the Relay, we watch the lighting of the luminaries ceremony and we remember those residents who have passed away as a result of cancer; we also gain strength from recalling their fight. We hope to include even more participants on our teams this year, but there are other ways to make a difference in the fight against cancer; for example, we sponsor a gift basket raffle every month at our front desk. Upcoming baskets include a "family fun night" themed basket with games, movies, and popcorn and our traditional Easter basket. Our joined support towards a cure will truly make a difference in the future. The community of friends and relatives of Ligonier Gardens was especially generous this year in our holiday drive called "Presents for Patients." With funds earmarked for activities, our Activities Coordinator Lisa Burkley was able to purchase a big-screen TV for our upstairs solarium - just in time for the Superbowl! As always, our hearts and prayers are with the American service men and women fighting in Iraq; we wish them and their families at home well.
