Activity Highlights LIGONIER GARDENS’ RESIDENT CELEBRATES 100TH BIRTHDAY!! Resident Aline Hoffman will soon be celebrating a milestone in her life on September 25th when she celebrates her 100th Birthday! She was born in Pittsburgh, the daughter of Mary Florence McCoy and Hugh A. Dickson. Aline has two brothers, John and James Dickson. The family lived in Brookline while Hugh worked on gas right-aways for the Rock Run Gas Company. Aline worked at Potter Title and Trust in the Trust Department. Through her brother John, Aline soon met her future husband, Howard Hoffman. Howard was the Vice President of Dollar Savings Bank. Aline and Howard married in 1930 and resided in Mt. Lebanon, Pittsburgh. There they started their family and were blessed with two wonderful sons, Robert and David. Howard has since passed on, but Aline is still blessed with her two sons, 10 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. Aline has been a resident at Ligonier Gardens for almost 5 years now. She enjoys going on outings with her friends, socializing with the staff and just spending quiet time in her room. Aline is especially kind and generous and a joy to be around. The staff of Ligonier Gardens and Bethlen Communities wishes her many more healthy and happy years!! HAPPY 100TH BIRTHDAY ALINE!!! LIGONIER GARDENS’ FINAL BIRD COUNT The results are in! In the previous newsletter Julie told you how our residents have been enjoying sitting on the deck and watching birds. The residents went out seven days for an hour to an hour and a half and recorded the variety of birds they saw. They recorded the breed of bird, gender, what the bird was doing, and what time it was seen. The top 5 birds: The most popular bird was the House Sparrow. There were 11 males and 5 females recorded. The second most popular was the House Finch, with 7 females and 3 males. In third was the Robin with a total of 8 birds recorded. The gender is too difficult for a novice bird watcher to determine. The dove was the fourth bird with a total of 6. This bird is also a difficult one to determine. In fifth was the Cardinal with 2 males and 2 females. BETHLEN BUILDS ITS WEB PRESENCE Lara Provance, Director of Marketing, Bethlen Communities After many hours of creating, designing, editing (and reediting and re-re-editing!), Bethlen Communities’ Web site became available for public use. I envisioned creating an easily-navigable, aestheticallypleasing, and appropriately-informative tool for visitors... a place that is enjoyable, not exasperating. The site features our new logo, online requests for information, history, photos, a map, facts about each facility, and so much more. Additions to the site will only continue to multiply. The following are two features we hope to soon include: • Virtual Tour- Visitors will be able to get a sneak peak at each facility • Alumni Page-All individuals we’ve served over the years will have a place to communicate and reunite. For any alumni interested in being added to our database, please contact Pat Armel, 724-238-2235. Also for family and friends of residents, the site now offers printable calendars, which list resident activities for the month. Participation with the resident during an activity is always encouraged, and hopefully, these calendars will provide a simple way to stay informed. My aim is for the site to be a useful, interactive instrument; and I would truly appreciate any feedback. Please accept this as an invitation to comment on any features listed (or not listed) above. Simply send a message to lprovance@bethlen.com, with the Subject line, Web site; or call 724-238-2235. Thank you, in advance, for your time. I also thank Péter Józsa of the HHRF for his tremendous help in building and continuing to build the site.
