Jioctal perüké (Eorner by Pat Armel CHEER UP THE LONELY July 11th is "CHEER UP THE LONELY DAY”. How appropriate for residents, staff and families of those in a Nursing Home. Especially if we remember not to burden the resident with problems he or she is not in a position to solve. Instead, bring cheery news from home, a favorite afghan, special treat, etc. to make your loved one feel more comfortable. Those in a Nursing Home often experience loneliness and boredom. They often enjoy pets, children, taped music or old family pictures. Some people like to have the newspaper or a short story read to them, or go for a ride if their condition permits. Sending out a short letter to relatives and friends giving news of your loved one may bring a response of welcomed cards and letters. Most residents don’t want someone giving them advice. They want to be listened to. They want to tell you about their pain, theirfears, sorrow, and how hard life is for them. They want an UNDERSTANDING and COMPASSIONATE EAR and HEART! Jfram Jksk af ;0kttctan by Edith Kovács LABELS TO THE CLOTHES! We are still having much problems with unidentified clothes and at the same time “lost” pieces of wardrobes. Please, dear families! When you bring in presents, gifts, surprises of clothing, etc., please show them to your loved one, but after that, give the items to the charge nurse or to Esther Berkey or myself. We will make sure that it goes to the labeler (.35$ cost for each) to stay in circulation. When a soiled garment is sliding down through the chute into the huge Laundry Room, packaged in a net bag, it goes into the 50 lb. size washing machine to be washed and sanitized. After the clothing is washed, the clothing loosely goes to be dried in the big dryers. We are yet one of the very few nursing homes where the laundering is still gratis, and we make big efforts to provide everybody with clean, neat clothing. The amount of the washed garments each day is a few hundred pounds. How could we be expected to know everybody’s belongings? Labels are to fix the name of the owners! They are a must to recognize the residents’ belongings! CAMPAIGN TO KEEP OUR BEAUTIFUL PINE TREE SENTRIES ALIVE! FAMILY SUPPORT GROUP MEETING On July 18th, at 2:00 p.m. in the Bethlen Home Dining Room, speaker Demaris Murren, R.N., from Latrobe Area Hospital will be speaking on “AIDES AWARENESS”. Family, staff and residents are welcome to attend. On Monday, August 9th, from 10:00a.m. to 4:00 p.m., the AMERICAN RED CROSS BLOODMOBILE of Johnstown will be at the Bethlen Home once again. We are in need of Volunteer Donors. Since the mobile unit is used, we are in need of having a schedule for the donors. To sign up for a scheduled time, please call Pat Armel of Social Services at 238-6711 from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Please help us for this worthy cause. Friends, family members of residents, public and staff are welcome to sign up to be a donor. If you are unsure but feel you would like to donate, please call and we would be happy to explain any restrictions that are made by the RED CROSS. We are starting a campaign to replace our aged pine trees on the two sites of the entrance road toward the Bethlen Home. The old trees have still their proud crown, but elsewhere have lost their needles, look bare, sick and need to be cut out. Since our forefathers planted these pine trees, which have watched generations come and go, we would like to keep the appearance of this beautiful, impressive sentry forthe generations to come. We hope to have many donations of $50.00 per tree for the memory of loved ones. During the September meetings when the big crowd gathers in the Bethlen Home from all overthe United States, we would like to plant the new pine trees and dedicate them in a festive ceremony. To plant the new trees is the least of our problems. To cut out the sick ones, dig out the huge roots and prepare the place for the new ones is a bigger headache, much more time and expense consuming. Please let us know how you feel about our plan!
