Mary Kondrich - Resident Mary recently became a resident here at Bethlen Home. She tells us she was born and raised and lived most of her married life in Derry. She also has two children who also live in the area. Besides being a homemaker, she worked for her .brother’s store, which was Kentucky Fried Chicken. Before her blindness, Mary enjoyed crocheting. She can remember making twenty-five afghans for gifts one year for Christmas. Mary also feels she has adjusted well to her blindness and that there are worse burdens to bear. She would love to have residents and staff visit her daily. tije JBesk of '(Ülje ^Btottcian by Edith Kovács Folyik A Vita A Tojások Főzéséiről. We said that nursing homes are residential institutions for individuals who need more intensive medical and personal care and assistance for daily living, than can be provided at home or in a semi-independent congregated living situation. Nursing homes may be skilled or intermediate or both in one institution where all services are provided like the Bethlen Home. The Bethlen Home’s 103 beds are always filled, and we may say proudly that we often hear praising of our care. We would be very happy to hear that we are almost perfect in every doing ... but no, we can’t, because we seem to have “mean monsters” in our basement bolted to the floor in the laundry. These monsters, although we call them washing machines,-eat personal clothing. They are called lazy, greedy and inutile because instead of instant service, it sometimes takes three whole days to deliver back the laundered personal garments to our impatient residents. Well it is true, but they “chew” constantly because of their work depends all the clean linen in the nursing home. It is true also that we still provide all their work still gratis, but maybe the modern consumers’ belief prevails: what is not expensive can’t be good. We feel that through the gratis laundry service we provide in the Bethlen Home, - which is almost unique in PA, - the cleanliness for all. The personal clothing can be washed when the rest of the linen isclean and secure for the nursing services. The personals depending on how they can be accommodated, takes sometimes three days until they can be delivered back to the owner. Can you imagine that for 103 residents how many pieces of garments have to be washed daily? Please come and visit the laundry and let me show you and explain to you. It seems everything endless there: the pouring in of dirty linen and the delivering out of clean ones. Bedlinen, towels, gowns, bibs, washcloths and everything "touched” on the floors has to be washed and sanitized daily. Our “wizzards”: our well-trained employees are handling the always hungry monsters: the washing machines, then the dryers. When at the end starts the retrieval of dry, clean clothing the time-consuming job of sorting starts by reading the names of the sewn-in labels. Can you imagine how many hundreds of labels have to be read daily to identify each garment? You have to
