ScttWtp $)i0igt)ts IT WILL BE A RAD WINTER IF: Sunday, September 9th celebrates National Grandparents Day. This day is to let grandchildren know how much they are loved and to show them strength and guidance that the Older Americans can offer. Below is a poem dedicated to everyone who has been a grandparent. GRANDPARENTS By: Ottis Shirk It's funny how grandparents sometimes act when their first grandchild arrives, But often little things will make great changes in our lives. While talking one day, it was Grandma who said, "I know I'll never bar Those darling, little, chubby hands From Grandma's cookie jar." Then Grandpa, with a heart of love, Spoke these words in between, "I'll never once refuse to buy him candy or ice cream." Grandma continued, "I'll sure be glad when he begins to crawl, and leaves his little fingerprints on furniture and wall." "And Grandpa won't refuse to spend, If it will bring him joy, The last cent in his pocket, For some simple, little toy." Thus they talked for quite a while, When Mother came along and said, "If you did all those things, I think it would be wrong." Grandparents must remember If it's true love they would show, For baby's good, there's many times They'll have to answer, "No." Everyone is familiar with old wive's tales and sayings, especially our residents. We asked several of our residents what some of the signs of having a bad winter were and below are some of the responses we received. If squirrels begin to gather nuts early in September. Birds eat up all the berries early. Birds huddle on the ground. Crows gather together. Animals grow a short fuzzy coat under their regular coat. Fur on animals such as sheep, dogs, and horses are thicker then usual. Squirrels build their nests low in the trees and their tails are bushier. Cows hooves will break off earlier. JACK FROST With Winter comes a lively pace, Frost be whiskers Nature's face, Chimney smoke rings melt the air, And snowmen join the human race. At fireside, friends seek to share The warmth and glow of moments rare, And children peer through crusty lace At evergreens with angels' hair. By: Leonore Huckleberry SURF. SIGNS Someone painted pictures on my windowpane last night... Willow trees with trailing boughs and flowers, frosty white. And lovely crystal butterflies; But when the morning sun Touched them with its golden beams, They vanished one by one! By: Helen Bayley Davis Living here at the Bethlen Home we are truly blessed with a beautiful view all year round. The favorite of all seasons seems to be Fall. This also holds true for many of the tourists that come to Ligonier at this time of year. SFPTFMBFR Oh, to know the end of summer with the com husks getting dry, Goldenrods in roadside splendor, Autumn hazes in the sky. Looking back upon the summer, Looking forward to the fall, With the middle of September Is the nicest time of all.
