Page 19 Fraternity- Testvériség Together with the youth, we visited a senior couple who needed much work to be done around their property. Immediately upon our arrival, we started to remove debris, clean around the house, pull weeds, and plant flowers. The results of our work were rewarding to all. The elderly couple was very appreciative, and the children not only had fun, but they also felt the rewards of their selfless work. When we bid goodbye to the couple, we could tell that we had touched their hearts. Our Join Hands Day project was held on May 5. Our members and friends met with project coordinators Sam and Renee Maldo- nato in Cranberry Park where we decided to do a thorough cleanup job. All day long our youth and adults worked endlessly, picking up trash, removing debris, pulling weeds, etc. The people in the neighborhood were so impressed with what we did— especially with the children’s participation—that they decided to continue with our work until the whole park was cleaned up and made safe for the children to play in. Memorial Weekend The Memorial Weekend observance began on May 27 at Grandview Cemetery. My husband, Joe, and I were honored to participate in the ceremony which was led by American Legion Commander, Jack Springer, and twenty other veterans. Together we placed 800 flags and planted 800 geraniums on the veterans’ graves. It was a very moving experience because it made us realize how many of these brave soldiers had sacrificed their lives for the sake of freedom. Irwin, PA Renee Maldonato and her volunteers We also came across the names of several Hungarian veterans who had served in WWII, as well as in Korea. In the cemetery, we met two young soldiers, Steve and Frank Ceriani, who are undergoing training for their mission in Iraq. This was a perfect opportunity for us to thank the two boys for serving our country courageously. At the end of the ceremony, Commander Springer invited us all for lunch. It is needless to say that we had a wonderful day of fellowship. We were thanked for our presence, and Joe and I look forward to participating in the Memorial Weekend observance next year again. Meeting with WWII Veterans Our Branch has four veterans who served in World War II. On Memorial Day, May 31, we met with one of them, Andrew Székelyhídi. Andrew served one year of training; one year in air defense in England; and one year in Europe. He landed on Omaha Beach, and he went through France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany. He was in the Battle of the Bulge in 1945. He served for five years in the National Guard 28th Int. Div., and for two years in the Korean War. Andrew and his wife, Stella, to whom he has been married for 54 years, live in Harmony, Pennsylvania. They have three children and seven grandchildren. Joe and I met the couple in Beaver Falls while attending the Memorial Day service. We introduced Andrew to Commander Springer, to the veterans of the American Legion, and to Mayor Boak of Beaver Falls. We presented the Certificate of Appreciation to Andrew during the program. The veterans said that the honor that the HRFA bestowed upon Andrew was a beautiful act of Andrew Székelyhídi-f f Mr. Joseph Fabri presenting the Certificate to Mr. Andrew Székelyhídi The young volunteers at Join Hands Day L. to r.: Peggy Fabri, Stella and Andrew Székelyhídi, Commander Jack Springer, and Joe Fabri Front: Dave Taylor, American Legion, and Joe Fabri.
