Branch Member LTC Julius Oroszvary, who recently returned from Iraq, was the guest speaker, comparing and contrasting aspects of the two wars. All veterans received certificates of appreciation from the American Legion and Mr. Szucs also received his certificate from the Federation. Both he and his wife said that they were very impressed with the ceremony and grateful for being able to share this honor with the other veterans. June 5 was Hungarian Day in New Brunswick and many Branch members helped in the Hungarian Reformed Church (HRC) of Trenton tent. Rain for the third year in a row discouraged many attendees and vendors from participating this year. Those who braved the weather were able to enjoy the festival. HRC Trenton once again demonstrated traditional Hungarian noodle making, sold donated Hungarian items, as well as hamburgers, hot dogs, and Arizona iced tea. The American Hungarian Civic Association (AHCA) of Trenton held its 70th Annual Scholarship Awards Dinner Dance on June 1 1. Fourteen scholarships were given to graduating area high school students. Krista Oroszvary, who will be receiving her Commonwealth of PA diploma at the end of June, was one of the recipients. LTC Oroszvary was the featured speaker, and his subject was “Freedom in Education.” By contrasting not only the Iraqi and American educational systems, but also comparing the AHCA scholarship recipients with those young people now serving in Iraq, who joined the Reserves in order to gain a college education, but who now are losing three semesters while risking their lives, LTC Oroszvary was able to hold everyone’s attention, and received a standing ovation for his speech. Branch member Bill Kraemer was chosen as “Man of the Year” for the AHCA in recognition of his many years of dedicated service, and will be honored at their summer picnic. Join Hands Day Since the Hungarian Reformed Church of Trenton was celebrating its 110th anniversary on May 16, our Branch decided to do whatever the church needed most to prepare for that important celebration. Therefore, for our Join Hands Day project we decided to clean the main floor of the Sunday School building, where the out-of-town visitors would gather for coffee and pastries before church service. The school building is rented out during the week to the International Charter School of Trenton and having 86 inner city children there five days a week puts a strain on the building that most churches do not experience. So special cleaning beyond what the school’s cleaning service performs was necessary. Join Hands Day made us all aware of how much is not being done on a regular basis at the church. We will speak to our respective groups, youth and adults, about setting up some sort of regular cleaning schedule to maintain a neat environment at all times. After an arduous cleanup work around the church, we proceeded with the planting of fresh plants, flowers, and shrubbery. The results of our efforts were very rewarding and pleasing to the eye. It is always a welcome occasion when we join hands together with our youth to work on a project which is close to their hearts—and beautifying our church not only means a lot to us, but also to the neighborhood. After a hard day’s work, we treated ourselves to lunch which we shared in the spirit of true fratemalism. Honoring Our Veterans It was an emotional gathering of World War II veterans at our service held at the American Hungarian Reformed Church of Allen Park on Saturday, May 29. The veterans related what they did during the war and received certificates signed by Southgate American Legion Post Commander James Austin. The Rev. Frank Varga, pastor of the church, led a very moving service. Breakfast followed and everybody enjoyed the excellent food and wonderful fellowship. The tables were decorated with patriotic flower arrangements which enhanced the mood of the day. All in all, it was a most memorable event.
