FRATERNITY Page 23 Soon afterwards, the work started. We were divided into various groups, some scraped and painted the iron fence around the playground, some planted gardens, others spread mulch, painted plywood silhouettes, and a wall mural. The appearance of the Hopkins Apartment playground was improved, especially with the gardens and colorful silhouettes. DC Mayor Anthony Williams, CEO and President of Points of Light Foundation Bob New friendships are formed. Goodwin, and a representative of the DC Housing Authority were introduced, and they spoke. Entertainment was provided by a DJ, and a free lunch was offered to all. After the activities, a two-hour cruise on the Potomac River was provided for pre-selected youth and adults from the apartment complex, along with planning committee volunteers. The 15- year-old youth leader, Chanel Autry, did an amazing job in conducting the meetings and coordinating the very minute details of the project. Youth and adults shared a wonderful day of fellowship. A Note of Thanks for Kindness Shown I would like to take this occasion to thank the members of my branch and friends who responded so wholeheartedly to help the schoolchildren in Iraq. I thank the DeKun, Korossy, and Szekeres families, as well as my Home Office colleagues, Rev. Stefan M. and Cindy Torok, Andrea Bárok, Eliz Pota, and Iren Vallario for their generous donations to this cause. In the same spirit of appreciation, I thank Andrea, Irenke, and Andrea’s mom for their immediate attention to the needs of the flood victims of Trumbull County, Ohio. I express my gratitude with the words of our Lord in Acts 20:35: “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” Teri Pflum, Branch Manager Tel: 301-251-1754 Branch 313 - Linden, New Jersey Officers elected for 2003 are: the Rev. Ambrus Batiz, President; John Nagy, Jr., Vice President; Priscilla Hunyady, Treasurer; and Clare Balog, Secretary-Controller. We made plans that during the year we would participate in the functions of our sister branches, including Hungarian Day in New Brunswick and the MariaPocs Fraternal Day, as well as attending the summer picnics of our local Hungarian organizations. Priscilla Hunyady, Director and Branch Manager Tel: 732-381-6413 Branch 352 - Cleveland, Ohio On Saturday, August 30th, an HRFA Fraternal Day was held at the West Side Hungarian Reformed Church. A crowd of nearly 100 enjoyed the fellowship and Hungarian cuisine which consisted of gulyás leves, lángos, and kifli. Upon the invitation of the Branch, HRFA President/CEO Rev. Stefan M. Torok and his wife, Cindy, attended this event. The Rev. Torok brought greetings from the Home Office as he addressed the crowd. Many thanks to Branch Manager Matyas Vidacs and all those who helped in making this day a success. The next day, Rev. Torok participated in the church services with new West Side pastor, the Rev. Zoltán S. Kelemen. Rev. Torok and his wife visited Rev. Kelemen and his new bride, Gabriella, at their newly remodeled parsonage. We wish them much happiness. Following the church services, a gracious invitation was extended to the Rev. Torok to attend the Hungarian Scouts Day in Cleveland. As he arrived at the campgrounds, he was surprised to find out that he was chosen to lead the opening service for the Protestant Scout members and their families. During the afternoon festivities, it was a pleasure to greet HRFA Director Clara Csikesz and her husband, Bela, from Pennsylvania. It was an all around great weekend of fellowship. L. to r.: The Rev. Stefan M. Torok and the Rev. Zoltán S. Kelemen in the Sanctuary of West Side Hungarian Reformed Church, Walton Hills, Ohio. Lunch is served.
