FRATERNITY Page 19 ins who do not receive visitors regularly. There was no feeling lost between the youth and the elderly. Many tears of joy and happiness were shed between them. Thanks to Join Hands Day, the youth now decided to make periodic visitations to the nursing home during the year. William A. Nicholas, Director Tel: 330-372-5183 Branch 245 - McKeesport, Pennsylvania Welcome New Member! We are pleased to welcome Jacob L. Majors to the HRFA. His grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Miklós Szabó, bought little Jacob a policy. They also bought their older grandson, James N. Schubert, a policy many years ago. James was recently awarded a $600 scholarship by the HRFA, for which he and his parents are very grateful. We wish to express our appreciation to Mr. and Mrs. Szabó for bringing their grandchildren into the Federation. Maria (Mitzi) Berei, Agent Tel: 412-242-5776 Branch 300 - Washington, D.C. Join Hands Day - Saturday, June 15, 2002 Youth and adults assembled at Brookland Elementary School at 9:00 A.M. for registration and a continental breakfast. The opening ceremony followed with the presentation of flags; singing of the National Anthem; greetings by: Maxine Lewis, President of the Chesapeake Fraternal Congress; Bob Goodwin, President and CEO of the Points of Light Foundation; and Bobby Polito, Director of Faith Based Community Initiatives. Everyone then joined hands in a big circle and prayed with the Rev. Stefan M. Torok, HRFA President/CEO for a successful project. Then the work began. Some youth and adults met in the cafeteria of the school and made 1,000 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. These were put in brown paper bags with a snack, drink and dessert and delivered to S.O.M.E. (So Others Might Eat), an area meal program for the homeless. Other youth and adults gathered at the school’s concrete wall (approx. 100’x8’). President Torok, CFO William B. Puskas, Jr., and Branch Vice President Tibor Pflum, primed the wall two days prior under the most arduous weather conditions. Young artists outlined various scenes, which were then painted in by volunteers. Other volunteers, led by the Boy Scouts of Washington, D.C, used weedwackers, brooms, rakes, etc. to trim weeds, clean sidewalks, and spread mulch around trees. Several people cleaned the weeds from planters and planted new plants. Volunteers donated toys, books and clothes to youth ages 6-20 who are connected with Clean and Pure Kids, a group that connects mentors with foster children. Blood donations were taken by the American Red Cross. At the end of a long but happy day, Brookland Elementary School grounds were cleaned and well manicured. New plants added color and neatness. The concrete wall proudly showed the work of the youth. Many of the children from the neighborhood helped to paint. Several residents from the neighborhood came over to see what was happening and were very pleased with what they saw. The Hungarian Scouts of Washington, D.C. were actively involved in Join Hands Day from its inception. In fact, they were the ones who had given us valuable ideas for our project. Much appreciation to them and to all the volunteers who made Join Hands Day such a great success. Teri Pflum, Branch Manager Tel: 301-251-1754 Rev. Stefan M.
