FRATERNITY Page 25 Joe Fabri as a Wrestler in Hungary I was born in Szentdomokos, a small town in Hungary. In 1951, at the age of 14, I went to an apprentice school in Ozd where a school friend introduced me to wrestling. As a young person I always liked wrestling and thus became very interested in joining a wrestling club. I remember looking forward so much to practice time. Soon I learned that wrestling was a physical sport and so I was determined to become the best in my weight class. With each practice and competition, I learned a little more. I put a lot of time and effort into practice, which started at 6 p.m. and lasted until 8:30 p.m. Before practice, I would swim for IV2 hours and then run for 1 hour with the track team. We had a competition almost every weekend all year round. The first six months of the year was Greek Roman wrestling and the second half was free style wresting. I liked both styles. All the hard work paid off when, in 1955,1 became National Champion of Hungary in my weight class and repeated the championship in 1956. During the uprising of 1956,1 left Hungary for the United States. In the United States, I did not have the opportunity to continue my wrestling career because there were no wrestling clubs where I lived at that time. I did have the opportunity, though, to coach and play soccer. I coached soccer for 12 years, but I always missed wrestling. Five years ago, Dave Lehman asked me to help coach the Blackhawk youth wrestling club. I was quite excited to help the young people accomplish their goals. Today I am the assistant coach of Blackhawk High School Wrestling and also the coach of the youth program. Wrestling starts in November and continues until March. Practice is on Mondays through Fridays. It gives me great satisfaction to see how the young men progress. Blackhawk is a great school. I have met a lot of nice people there and I enjoy working with all the coaches and the young men and their parents. I am proud of those young people who joined our Federation. We have close to 20 young people in our membership from the wrestling club. Introducing Blackhawk High School Wrestling Teams We would like to congratulate Blackhawk Wrestling Club for its 1999-2000 season of success. We would also like to welcome the young people who are new members of the HRFA. The wrestling club consists of three different groups, the Youth Group, Junior High, and Varsity. The wrestlers practice 5 days a week. It consists of team and individual competitions. The Club itself has more than 60 members and an excellent coaching staff. It has been blessed with the active involvement of parents in Club activities. Varsity The HRFA wishes the wrestlers much success the coming year and God’s blessings on them and their families.
