FRATERNITY Page 13 MARIA POCS Continued from page 12 Free pony rides and the “back by demand” Animal Petting Farm proved to be very popular with our young children and their parents. To further captivate the interest of the children, Laura Melanson followed up last year's success with an expanded craft table. Face painting, hair braiding, making beaded necklaces and other crafts kept the 25-30 children engaged for many hours. The dedicated work of our staff and the presence of our loyal friends under very exhausting circumstances gives testimony to our desire to further our culture and perpetuate our Hungarian Heritage. Michael Pauli, Jr., Director, General Chairman HELPING HANDS Meeting with Rt. Rev. László Horkay, Bishop of the Reformed Church of Sub-Carpathia in Rev. Stephan Torok’s residence in Perth Amboy, New Jersey served a dual purpose. First, it gave us the opportunity on behalf of ACROSS THE SEA the Maria Poes Fraternal Day Committee to make a presentation of $3,000 to Bishop Horkay for the purpose of aiding the Hungarian people ravaged by the recent floods and snow. The donation will be distributed equally amongst the Bishops of the Hungarian Roman Catholic, Greek Catholic (Byzantine) and the Reformed Churches to aid their people in the affected flood zones. Bishop Horkay was overwhelmed by our thoughtfulness and generosity. He especially was grateful that we have not lost our consciousness toward our forefathers. Secondly, it gave my wife Margaret and me an opportunity to chat with him about the areas of Beregszaz. It is very close to Makkosjanosi where my father and his sisters and brothers were born. He mentioned going through that area and even going to the local Churches. Bishop Horkay demonstrated a keen sense of understanding and compassion towards Margaret’s efforts to obtain records from that area. Finally, he looked at us and said “never allow your children and grandchildren to lose their sense of pride in the culture and heritage of the Hungarian people. Bring them together often and relate the stories of our heroic ancestors. Never let them forget”. Hurricane Floyd - September 17,1999 When God destroyed the world by the greatest flood known to man, He made a promise to never destroy the entire world again by a flood. He has kept His promise. True, from time to time He has sent great floods to many parts of the world, but His promise remains constant. Last week, Hurricane Floyd visited my town of Manville, New Jersey, and I have never personally seen such devastation of personal property in my life. One section of the town called “Lost Valley” has about 300 homes, all were under water, and the area was cut off from the rest of the town. After the water receded, every street was lined with furniture, refrigerators, etc. to be picked up. Across the other end of the town, the same devastated picture. My home was spared with not a drop of water in my basement, but across from my home, every basement was under water. My brother lives three blocks from me, and the street there was like a river. I had to go by rowboat to take some food to him. No one was able to go out of Continued on page 16 The hospitality table with workers in the background. Family enjoying the animal petting farm.
