FRATERNITY Page 29 Study Team in a school or community setting to help school- aged children and their families. I would also like to thank my parents, Russell and Margaret, and husband Christopher for their love, support and encouragement.” Dawn was recommended by Margaret Pauli, Branch BRANDON CSOMO Member of Br. 62 “I would like to take the time to thank you for the Student Aid & Loan benefit that you so kindly gave to me. Being a music major, it is hard to obtain music scholarships from college. Your gift will be very useful to help pay for my education. I am doing extensive work on my primary instrument, the clarinet; as well as studying the piano and saxophone. I am currently in the Valparaiso University Chamber Concert Band, which is the top band at the school. Besides studying the instruments, I am also taking music theory courses and a conducting course. Aside from my music classes, I am enrolled in a theology class and a literature class. When I am not in class, I am studying, practicing my instruments, or teaching private lessons. I am currently teaching clarinet and saxophone to young students two nights a week at Puzons Music in Lansing, Illinois. After I graduate from college, I would like to continue teaching as well as playing my instruments in a professional setting. Ever since sixth grade, I have wanted to study music in college and teach private lessons. Your gift will help me reach my goals. Again, I would like to thank you for your generosity. Your contribution will not only help me pay for my college education, but it will help me live out my dreams after I graduate from Valparaiso University.” Brandon was recommended by Maria Kovács, Branch Manager KARRIE A. (REDWAY) DIEGAN Member of Br. 22 “I would like to extend my deepest appreciation for the grant I received from the HRFA. I am a junior at Youngstown State University in Ohio pursuing a B.A. degree in Respiratory Care. I have been on the Dean’s list repeatedly and have consistently been in the top 5 percent of my Respiratory class since entering the program. Besides attending college classes, I recently began clinical training at Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren, Ohio, and frequently volunteer for the American Lung Association. After graduation in 1999,1 will be able to work in hospitals, home care, and/or specialize in a wide variety of pulmonary fields. I am also a wife, homemaker and mother to my four-year-old son, Shane Michael. I would like to thank Mrs. Patricia Morey, Manager and Secretary of Branch 22, for my recommendation for this grant. Also, I would especially like to thank my grandparents, John and Elizabeth Redway, lifetime Federation members, for providing me with the opportunity to receive this grant.” JESSE-ANNE ELWERT Member of Br. 300 “I am nineteen years old and I go to college in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. I have a great variety of interests and activities. My two most important ones are definitely photography and communication in sign language. I do lots of photography for fun e.g., pictures of my friends, and it seems to make it more personal to be able to develop the photos myself. I have even done a little bit of paid photography. My goal in life is to become a teacher of deaf children. This year time constraints have rendered me unable to do any volunteering with the deaf community, but in my senior year of high school, I was a teacher’s helper for a kindergarten class at Rochester School for the Deaf from 6-8 hours a week. Last year, I volunteered at the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Community Center in Calgary three times a month. Growing up, church was a very influential factor in my life. Throughout high school, my youth group was very important to me. Today, in college, I attend church regularly, and hold to my beliefs about God. Besides being a Christian, I have a deep respect for other faiths such as Buddhism, Sikhism, and Hinduism. I have learned about these cultures in college, and I find them interesting. Lastly, one value that affects my life very personally is the importance of all life on this planet, including that of animals. This idea has, after years of consideration, left me with no choice but to become a vegetarian.” Jesse was recommended by Steve Major, Branch Manager BRANDON CSOMO JESSE-ANNE ELWERT KARRIE A.
