Page 10 TESTVÉRISÉG Hungarian Reformed churches in Staten Island, N.Y.; Passaic and New Brunswick, N.J. While serving as pastor of the Magyar Reformed Church in New Brunswick, he was actively involved in community activities on the local, state and national levels. He was president of the Hungarian Civic Association, a neighborhood revitalization agency in New Brunswick. He was organizer and five-term chairman of the Hungarian Festival at the New Jersey Garden State Arts Center. He was a member of the American delegation to the Madrid meeting of the Helsinki Conference as an appointee of President Jimmy Carter. Currently he is chairman of the Board of Directors of the Hungarian American Coalition. Rev. Bertalan is a graduate of the College Seminary in Sárospatak, Hungary. He did graduate work in theology at Halle, Germany; Basle, Geneva, and Zurich, Switzerland; and at Princeton Theological Seminary, Princeton, N.J. He received Degrees of Doctor of Divinity, honoris causa, from Hope College in Holland, Michigan, and from the College of Debrecen, Hungary. Before the dinner program of the evening was brought to a close, Gypsy Joe, well-known in the Metropolitan area, in a surprise appearance, serenaded Rev. Bertalan with “Ballag már a vén diák”, bringing the gathering to its feet and tears to the eyes. The program ended with the benediction which was delivered by Rev. Ernest Kosa, Chaplain, U.S. Army (retired) who is the brother-in-law of Rev. Bertalan. The event rang of farewells, to be sure, but even more importantly, it was an evening of warm memories and a time of recognition and celebration of the honored guests for many years of faithful service to the HRFA. Yolan Varga THE OFFICERS of the HUNGARIAN REFORMED FEDERATION AMERICA GEORGE DÓZSA - PRESIDENT George Dózsa, President George Dózsa, newly elected and installed President of the Hungarian Reformed Federation of America, needs little or no introduction to members of the HRFA family. He has been actively involved in Federation activities for the last quarter of a century. The 34th Convention of the HRFA did, in fact, take a different turn in electing a lay person as President for the first time in the last sixty one years. Dózsa is well qualified to meet the challenges he faces in giving leadership to the future needs of the Federation. Prior to being elected President, Dózsa was Vice President-Secretary of the Federation, a position he has held since 1989. He previously served as Vice President of the Board of Directors for four years, as well as director of the New Jersey District for twelve years. Prior to assuming the position of Vice President-Secretary with the Federation, Dózsa was a chemist in the Department of Environmental Science at Rutgers, the State University, in New Brunswick, NJ. Over the years, he has been involved in both church and civic activities. He served as Chief Elder of the Magyar Reformed Church in New Brunswick, NJ from 1974-80; as Commissioner of the Housing and Urban Development Authority for the City of New Brunswick from 1977-85; as Vice President of the Hungarian Civic Association in New Brunswick from 1972-77; and as a member of the Planning Board of the City of New Brunswick from 1984-89. He is currently a member of the Developmental Council of the American Hungarian Foundation and Secretary of the American Friends of the Hungarian Heart Foundation. Dózsa is a graduate of Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. He maintains his residence in New Brunswick with his wife Matilda and their two children Cindy and George. Yolan Varga
