FRATERNITY Page 21 Lisa Lynn Kirkland, Member of Br. 152: “I would like to take this opportunity to express to the entire HRFA my deepest appreciation and gratitude for the generous contribution of student aid that was recently awarded to me. At the present time, I am 21 years of age, and I am currently attending the Community College of Allegheny County, pursuing my goal in the field of Respiratory Therapy. I plan on graduating in the spring of 1995 as a Respiratory Therapist. After graduation, I would very much like to obtain a job as a respiratory therapist, specializing in the area of neonatology. Lisa Lynn Kirkland I would also like to take this opportunity to personally thank my Bubbie, (Grandmother) Mrs. Mary Bota, Manager of Br. 152. Without her help, I would not have been able to receive the student aid. She has also been my inspiration and a source of guidance to me. Your contribution will be of great help towards my college expenses. Once again, thank you.” Lisa Lynn was recommended by Mary Bota, Branch Manager Grant A. Meyers, Member of Br.74: "I wanted to take this opportunity to extend my sincere gratitude for the student aid grant, and to take this opportunity to introduce myself. The task of financing a college education is always a difficult one, so when I learned that I had received a grant from your organization, I was delighted and proud. I was delighted because the grant relieves some of the financial burden from myself and my mother. The feeling of pride comes from your organization judging my educational and philanthropic endeavors as worthy of award. I am 21 years old, and a Senior at Michigan State University. I will be graduating in May of 1994 with a B.A. degree is psychology. Upon completion of my B.A. degree, I plan to attend graduate school. My ultimate goal is to attain my PhD. in psychology and specialize in the area of addictions and relapse. When I am not attending classes and studying, I volunteer my time at the Listening Ear Crisis Intervention Center, I am a child advocate at the Ingram County Adolescent Diversion Project, and I am employed part-time as a desk receptionist for McDonel Residence Hall. At the Listening Ear, I work on a crisis hotline. The Listening Ear is a non-profit volunteer staffed organization. It is one of the oldest crisis centers in the country and serves as a model for centers across the United States. The center has allowed me to develop the important skills of listening and empathy, which are essential to the career I have chosen. The center also provides me with a sense of accomplishment knowing that I have touched and helped the lives of others. In my position as a child advocate, I work with youths who have found themselves in the juvenile court system. In this program, I represent the youth in situations concerning employment, school, family, and the juvenile court system. I help them to access community-based resources and to establish order in their lives. I value the program because it is set up so that while I am helping these young people, they are at the same time learning to help themselves. The program is designed so that when my intervention is over, these young people can successfully survive and thrive in their own environment without my help. In addition to the aforementioned activities, I am also involved in Michigan State sponsored clubs relating to my major, and politics. While these organizations are important to me, the previously mentioned activities take up the bulk of my time. Once again, thank you very much for the student aid grant. I am greatly honored.” Grant was recommended by Alex Jozsa, Branch Manager Grant A. Myers
