BRAN CH 300 OF THE HUNGARIAN REFORMED FEDERATION OF AMERICA SÁROSPATAK ACADEMY, established in 1531, is located in Sárospatak, a small town just south of the Czechoslovakian border and just west of Romania. George Rákóczi I and his wife, Susanna Lorantffy took the young Academy under their wing, endowed it with lands and truly established the school as a leading center of culture and learning. The ACADEMY flourished, establishing a Classical Gimnasium, an English College, Teacher's Institute and a Theological Seminary. In 1951 the State nationalized over 1300 Christian schools in the country and the ancient and venerable Sárospatak Academy was relegated to local high school status with a typical Marxist doctrine. Recently the government of Hungary returned Sárospatak to its rightful owner, and the re-opening celebration will take place on September 1, 1990. This tour is guided by the Reverend Imre Bertalan, a graduate of Sárospatak, who is a member of the American Hungarian Committee to "RE-claim" Sárospatak.
