Page 22 TESTVÉRISÉG BRANCH 359, McKEESPORT, PA Among the recipients of Student Aid is Vilma Yolanna Tury. We are especially pleased to be able to assist her since she has gone back to graduate school in a completely different field. A little bit of her background: In High School she participated in orchestra and choir, and in the World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh’s Seventh Annual World Affairs Institute. She was awarded the Rensselaer Medal for Achievement in Math and Science, and was a National Merit Scholar. She graduated from Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA in 1983 with University Honors and a B.S. in Chemistry. During her four years there, she was a member of the C-MU Health Professions program, a member of the Mortar Board senior honor society, editor of the chemistry department undergraduate weekly newsletter, was named Department’s Outstanding Freshman Chemist, and was awarded the ACS Student Affiliates’ Award in Junior and Senior year. She also competed in intramural volleyball, captaining a women’s and a three-man team and co-captaining a co-ed team. Vilma was awarded graduate fellowships to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst to study polymer science, but quickly lost interest in the program. For the past two years, she has been taking, among other political science courses, Russian, Spanish and Hungarian and has been accepted to the school of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University, NYC for an M.I.A., specializing in Eastern Europe and International Security Policy. Congratulations! We wish you much success in this new endeavor. Mr. and Mrs. Tury have been active members of the Federation. For many years, Mrs. Tury was the branch manager of Branch #359. We, too, are proud of their daughter. BRANCH 144, CARTERET, NJ At the meeting for the election of officers for 1985, the following were elected: Rev. Gabor Nitsch, president; Louis Medgyesi, vice-president; Helen T. Nitsch, secretary-treasurer; Emil Kovács, controller. BRANCH 379, HOLLYWOOD, CA At the January meeting, the members of Branch 379 re-elected the officers — Tibor Kardos, president; Rev. Dezső Trombitás, first vice-president; Bela Ferencz, 2nd vice-president; Karoly Pall, controller; Tibor Dolinszky, secretary. The members of the branch expressed their pleasure at having the branch manager elected to the Board of Directors of the HRFA. At the June meeting, held in the Congregational Hall of the Hungarian Reformed Church of Hollywood, the Branch Secretary opened the meeting and announced that the sole Agenda for the meeting is the “Statue of Liberty Project.” 1. The Branch Officers seriously considered several possibilities for some kind of Branch Get Together, on or around the Fourth of July Weekend, the net receipt of which would than be forwarded to the Home Office, as the Branch’s contribution to this worthwhile project. 2. Due consideration was given to the fact that our members are very scattered, not only in the vicinity of the Los Angeles metropolitan area, but all over California, and some even in other States. 3. A motion was made, to sponsor a Coffee and Cake Social at the Hungarian Reformed Church and ask for special donations for the Statue of Liberty Project. The motion was rejected since not all church members are Branch members and it might be misunderstood or taken out of contex to mix a church and Federation social and fund raising event. 4. After lengthy discussion, an ammended motion was made: have two Coffee Clutch Social, one preceeding and one following the Fourth of July celebration, that is on 6-30-85 and 7-7-85 both sponsored by the branch, with the proceds going to the Women’s Guild, who in turn will make a donation toward the Statue of Liberty Fund, through the branch, and in behalf of the branch. 5. For the benefit of our members residing too far away to attend these Fund Raising Events, a circular will be mailed, asking for a maximum $5 donation for the purpose. A self-addressed and stamped return envelope will be included with the letters. 6. All the monies so collected will be forwarded to the Home Office not later than July 8th, 1985. Tibor Dolinszky, secretary
