FRATERNITY 3 percent of the peoples of the world can readily find the strength that God has had condensed between two covers. Think of it — a world without God's truth as revealed in His Hook! Could you live in such a world? Would you want your children to live in such a world? What better way can minds be moulded and spiritually trained than through the Word of God? If the young people especially can be reached with the Scriptures, they will, in their restlessness, find what they seek. The demands for the Book rise daily. Today's world has 500 million persons between the ages of 15 and 50 who are not yet literate; of this number, 60 to 70 million adults learn to read each year. What will they read? Although Christian church membership is increasing by 20 million each year, only 8.5 million Bibles and Testaments are being supplied by the United Bible Societies. The purpose of the American Bible Society has never changed in its nearly 150 years of existence — to make the Scriptures available to all peoples in the languages they speak, at a price they can afford to pay. The United States Senate has recently approved a joint resolution authorizing President Lyndon B. Johnson to proclaim 1966 as “The Year of the Bible." The resolution sets forth the 150 years' activity of the American Bible Society in producing and circulating the Bible throughout the world. People from many communities are invited to observe 1966 “with appropriate ceremonies and activities to the end that all our people may have a better knowledge and appreciation of the Holy Scriptures." As we face the new year of 1966, help make it the Year of the Bible by reading your Bible . . . living the Bible . . . and giving the Bible.
