2 FRATERNITY sparked that straggle for freedom but, receiving only lip service from abroad, zvas overwhelmed . . . Looking back 100 years we now realize that Kossuth toured these United States not for the triumphs he zvas received with, perhaps not evezi for the liberation of his own homeland. He wanted America to become interested in zvorld leadership, instead of letting her sons turn against one another, in a fratricidal duel of dire consequences. Looking back 100 years, we see Zágonyi, too, not only as the dashing Hungarian hussar, the hero of Springfield, but as a practical proponent of lightning-fast cavalry warfare in which his countrymen have excelled for 1,000 years, making thus possible that Western Europe dezielop without harrassments. Just as Gen. George Washington’s Drillmaster, Col. Kováts, has done some nine decades before him, Zágonyi demonstrated for all to see that mounted troops could have decided many a battle with greater dispatch and less agony. By presenting this full-size oil portrait of Major Zágonyi to the people of Springfield, through the generosity of its creator, 1956 freedom-fighter Prof. Victory Jeney of St. Louis, l am confident that our people will make even greater efforts to visit your fair and friendly hometown, where local history echoes the name of one of their kin. (B. B.) FROM THE CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES July 31, 1961 Rev. George E. K. Borshy Chairman of the Board, American Hungarian Federation 1761 “R” Street, N. W., Washington, D. C. Dear Mr. Borshy: Thank you very much for your telegram regarding my opposition to our Government’s sale of subsidized farm products to Communist nations. I was indeed shocked when I first learned of this deplorable foreign policy change. U. S. tax dollar aid to enemy nations is a dangerous course for our country to follow in these perilous times. I intend to press the Administration for the reasons prompting this senseless change in our foreign policy, and I will also seek an immediate cessation of these subsidized sales to Russia and her satellites. Your thoughtful letter was most welcome and encouraging. If I may ever be of assistance to you in the future, please do not hesitate to call on me. Sincerely, Charles McC. Mathias, Jr.
