6 TESTVÉRISÉG The big auto concerns believe that the union can’t do this, — but they many times underestimated the leadership of the union under Reuther. In any case there will be a very lively family fight in this large union for a long time to come. THE RUBBER WORKERS similarly are watching the outcome of the steel strike with keen interest. Their union doesn’t have a general contract, but has separate contracts with the big firms. The Goodrich contract runs out June 30, the one with Firestone July 10. These have a “modified” union shop at present, but the union will demand a “complete” union shop, beside increased pension benefits (now $100 a month including Social Security) and additional insurance coverage. The United Rubber Workers (CIO) has 200,000 members now. It is probable that its new demands will be based more on the earnings of the companies than on living costs. A BULLETIN issued by the Bloomfield College and Seminary, N. J. for recruiting new faculty members, says the following: “Candidates must have definite, positive loyalty to American political ideals and traditions. Reds, pinks, near pinks, and fellow travelers will not fit into the policy of Bloomfield.” These are hard-hitting and unmistakable words from this venerable institution, which gave so many able Christian leaders to our own churches. If the many hundreds of American institutions of higher learning would talk with the same conviction and emphasis, the general situation would brighten instantly. AT A DISTRICT CONFERENCE one of our branch secretaries expressed the opinon that when the Insurance Departments of the different states examine the books of the fraternals, they are interested only in the figures and not in the “philosophy” that is behind them. That is: if the figures add correctly and the books are in balance and the examiners are unable to find any glaring violation, they are satisfied and have no intention to look behind the figures and seek possible “philosophies” that might be harmful, unlawful or contrary to the by-laws of the fraternal. This belief, as it would be easy to demonstrate, is entirely erroneous. Those who deal with these authorities every year, know very well that they are much interested in the so-called “philosophy” behind the correct and neat figures. One example should be enough. It is a generally known fact that the N. Y. Insurance Dept, proceeded against the IWO on the grounds that it was a Communist front and dissipated its assets in supporting the Daily Worker and other communist activities. Similarly the Ins. Dept, of Illinois took over all the property, business and affairs of this “fraternal” and prohibited it from doing any new business of any kind in Illinois, but kept the insurance of old members in effect. Now, let no one have any doubt about it: the books of this fraternal were in perfect order all the time, it paid all the claims promptly and to a superficial investigator there was apparently nothing wrong with, it, — but exactly because the state authorities did look behind the neat figures and discovered there a dangerous and unlawful “philosophy” for its members and for the country, — they acted as they did. "A TISZTELETRE LEGMÉLTÓBB ASSZONY..." Kossuth amerikai útja százéves évfordulóján Kossuthra “a szabadság angyalára”, prófétára, hősre, emlékezünk. Ezeken kívül Kossuth szerető szivü fiú is volt, aki édesanyját igy nevezte: “a tiszteletre legméltóbb asszony, az édesanyám ...” A tiszteletre legméltóbb asszony napja május második vasárnapja, édesanyák napja, a család, az otthon ünnepnapja. Mi, Református Egyesületünk nagy családjának tagjai, adjunk hálát Istennek azért, akiből csak egyet, egyetlen egyet, adott Isten, adjunk hálát édesanyánkért, az ő szeretetéért. Mint Petőfi írta öccsé- nek: “Anyánkat, azt az édes, jó anyát, óh Pistikám, szeresd, tiszteld, imádd. Mi ő nekünk? azt el nem mondhatom, mert nincs rá szó, nincsen fogalom! De megmutatná a nagy veszteség, ha elszólitaná tőlünk az ég...” Érezzük meg, hogy Isten mi ránk bízta az édesanyai szeretet megéreztetésének szolgálatát azok iránt, kik édesanya, otthon nélkül vannak. Az árvák, öregek iránt. Mert Isten sokszor személyeken, intézményeken át érezteti meg gondviselő szeretetét. Ezért gyűjtött össze a Református Egyesületbe, ezért adta nekünk a Bethlen Otthont, az árvák, öregek otthonát. Áldott legyen a tiszteletre legméltóbb asszony! Áldottak legyenek, akik édesanyai szeretet éreztetnek! Legyen édesanya Egyesületünk, Bethlen Otthonunk! "LELKEMRE BALZSAMKÉNT HATOTTAK..." Újabban érkezett amerikai magyar testvéreink közül az elmúlt évben 750-en lettek Egyesületünk családtagjai. Sokan már a hontalanságban megérezték Egyesületünk segítő szeretetét, sokan, itt keresve testvér közösséget, léptek Egyesületünk tagjai sorába. Jöttek, mert testvériségre, szeretetre szomjuhoznak. Minden szív megértésre, szeretetre vágyakozik. Az új amerikás magyarok szive még inkább szomjuhozik erre. Hisz mindent elveszhettek. Egész életük romba- dőlt. A romokon itt próbálnak új életet építeni. Soknak, Istennek hála, sikerül. De sokra újabb megpróbáltatás, kereszthordozás nehezedik. Ezek közé tartozik Clevelandban lakó Illyés Andrásné is, ki élettársát, operáció után, itt veszítette el. Dula József clevelandi képviselőnk a halotti bizonyítványt a következő sorokkal küldte be hozzánk: “Megboldogult testvérünk sokat szenvedett hazájáért. Mindenét elveszítette.
