e TESTVÉRISÉG Education and the Good Life We have seen the importance of education with respect to our vocational preparation, leisure time activities, and intelligent citizenry. Finally, we can sum up our discussion by stating that education serves humanity by promising a good life. Statistics prove that in general a person with a higher education enjoys a decidedly greater earning power than one who lacks the same training. The values of a good education, however, cannot at all times be measured in terms of dollars and cents—we will always have people whose incomes will be limited despite superior educational attainments, and other who are powerful financially even without much formal or informal schooling. Yet, fortunately, the “good life” is not confined to earthly riches. One who has gained an appreciation of the finer things in life; who has cherished the importance of the spiritual and mental even beyond that of the financial; and one who has rendered distinguished service to his fellow men can truly live in the happy thought that life is really worth living and that this old world isn’t such a bad place after all. Education is not purported to be a panacea—a cure-all—but one who drinks deeply of its fountain will eventually be rewarded in one way or another with many lasting satisfactions. Experience has shown that in the past our Magyar people have not always been in sympathetic accord with the importance of higher education for their sons and daughters. It is our fervent wish and hope that the new generation will not be loath to sacrifice and accept its unlimited possibilities. Yes, we say “sacrifice” because just like anything else that is really worth having, education also demands a price. The price paid in this particular instance is not strictly confined to a monetary consideration; it invariably calls for many other self-denials and an expenditure of concerted effort. For the parents, equipping their children with the advantages of education, it often means the relinquishing of hard- earned funds that they might otherwise use for more immediate though hardly more lasting needs, and perhaps foregoing of incomes that their student offsprings would be earning if they did not engage in educational pursuits. For the student it generally means the deferment of his financial independence; countless hours of arduous mental exertion, the difficulties of which may far surpass manual labor. Moreover, it may mean the giving up of numerous short-lived pleasures due mainly to lack of time and money for these diversions. Still others may shoulder a double burden by earning their school and personal expenses, and fulfilling their study requirements at the same time. Countless sacrifices usually must be made, but when one considers a long- range viewpoint the rewards and compensations decidedly counter-balance the money, time and effort expended. This discussion of the importance of education for the new generation would not be complete if we failed to recognize the fine work our Federation has done and is continuing to do in this respect. For many years this outstanding fraternal organization, recognizing the value and importance of higher education, has not only given it vigorous encouragement, has not simply offered it “lip service,” but has actually demonstrated its sincere intentions by granting generous financial assistance to its worthly members. May it continue to render this invaluable service, and may an increasingly larger number of our young men and women come to the realization that in the days that lie ahead education will cease to be a luxury but undoubtedly will become more of a necessity. A Cleveland, O.-ban megjelenő Warner Ink c. bányászlap s a Szabadság napilap is közölte fényképét és hozta élelleirásál, mint kiváló szakembernek a bányászat terén. A Borsod megyei Miskolcon született, majd elemi iskolái elvégzése után a Diósgyőr melletti szénbányában korán munkába kezdett magyar gyerek Perecesen folytatta munkáját, ahol az első villanyos bánya-motor kezelője volt. Majd 1904-ben Amerikába érkezve Maynard, O. lakott és előbb a Crescent, majd a Barton-i bányákban dolgozott. 1908-ban vette feleségül Nagy Lujzát, Nagy Pál húgát s házasságukat 5 gyermek tette boldoggá, kik közül József columbusi ügyvéd, Béla columbusi orvos, Ferenc a Florence Mine vezetője, jelenleg a Haza szolgálatában, Lujza columbusi kórházi ápolónő, Julia columbusi állami hivalanoknő. Hegedűs & Nagy néven General Store üzletük volt sógorával, 1927-ben vele a Friends Coal Co. alapították, majd Whitney Warner Sr.-al hármasban a Florence Coal Co.-t szervezték meg 1930-ban, melynek Hegedűs József lett a főnöke. A Belmont, O.-ban egy szép 16 aceros farmon élő házaspárt szives szeretettel üdvözöljük s kívánunk további sikert munkájukhoz s áldást egész családjukra. MEGHALTAK Balogh Gáborné (84-ik oszt.
