So the very morning after our arrival Father said to us, “Put on your best clothes. We are going to find out whether or not you are to go to the Gymnasium. I do not want you to lose any more time from your studies.” Mother helped us into our finest garments, which were the picturesque ones of the rural boys of Hungary. I wore black boots, a richly embroidered coat, a hat decorated with its bustard feather, and about my neck I looped the long whip that a herder of horses might use. To top off all this elegance, I had a small dark-red terracotta pipe, with a short stem of cherry wood, and a tobacco pouch as colorful as my coat, from which hung a piece of flint and a bit of steel. These the Hungarian, who is a heavy smoker, wears proudly at his lienen girdle. Father started forth with his five sons of school age, all in their best. He carried the letter from the Minister of Education, and with it as a talisman we hoped for a lucky fate. In spite of the letter we were all a little nervous, however, and soon after we had called goodbye to Mother, Father and I began to smoke feverishly, so that before long a cloud of smoke marked our passage. All in line, one behind another, we neared the city like a small triumphal procession, with the swiftfading smoke from our pipes billowing out like banners. Father had to ask the way frequently, and when at last we found the Gymnasium he went inside to inquire for the right persons to whom to present our case. He was not gone long, and when he reappeared in the doorway, he said, “come. They know all about Sándor, and are expecting us.” The Gymnasium of Nagyvarad belong in those days to the Premonstratensian monks, who are famous for their educational system, and whose order in Hungary is very wealthy. Szeptember vége felé járt, mikor a városba költöztünk és az iskolai év már megkezdődött. Megérkezésünket követő napon atyánk igy szólt hozzánk: “Öltsétek fel az ünneplőtöket. Megyünk, hogy megtudjuk, vájjon fogtok-e hát gymnazium- ba járni vagy sem. Nem akarom, hogy a tanulmányotokban tovább is időt veszítsetek. Édes anyánk a legjobb és legfestőibb magyar népviseleti ruhánkat adta ránk. Én felvettem a gazdagon hímzett cifra szűröm, fekete csizmám, túzok tollal díszített kalapom és nyakamba köritettem hosszú karikásomat úgy ahogy azt csikósok viselik. Mindezt az ünnepi díszt betetőzte a rövid, cseresznyefa szárú, sötét-vörös cseréppipám, meg a cifra szűröm mintájára hímzett dohányzacskóm, melyen egy-egy darab kova és tapló csüngött. Mindezeket egy szenvedélyes dohányos magyar büszkén viseli a gatyakorcában. Atyánk elindult öt, ünneplőbe öltözött iskolasoros fiával. Kezében tartotta a kultuszminiszter levelét, mint egy talizmánt, amivel a sorsunkat reméltük üstökön ragadni. A levél ellenére is mindannyiunkat elfogott az idegesség és alighogy “Isten Hozzád"-ot mondtunk édes anyánknak, apám meg én heves pöfékeléshez láttunk, úgy, hogy csakhamar nagy füstgomolyag jelezte utunk csapását. Libasorban, egyik a másikat követve haladtunk a város felé, mint valami diadalmenet és pipánk gyorsan enyésző füstje, mint zászló imbolygóit utánunk. Atyánknak gyakran kellett az irányt kérdezni és végre amikor a gymnaziumot elértük betért az épületbe, hogy felvilágositást nyerjen kihez fordulhatunk ügyünkkel. Nem telt bele sok idő, amikor alakja ismét feltűnt az ajtóban és igy kiáltott felénk: “Gyertek! Sándor ügyéről mindnyájan tudnak és várnak is már bennünket.” Ebben az időben a nagyváradi gimnázium a premontrei rend (fehér papok) kezében volt, kiknek magyarországi szerzete igen gazdag és hires tanítási módszeréről. Alighogy az épületbe léptünk, tüstént egy kerek arcú, jóságos mosolyu barát elé vezettek bennünket. Ez volt az igazgató, ki tudva
