TÁROGATÓ A Canadian Magyar Monthly for the enlightenment and entertainment of Hungarians, edited by Dr. A. Czakó, published by The United Church of Canada. Sixth year, No. 8. February, 1944. CONTENTS. There is a description of the orchestra and its constituents: the strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion instruments. We deal with the conductor’s work and try to define the good orchestral performance. Speaking of conductors, we remember Haus Richter, the great Hungarian conductor, who contributed so much to the musical life of England and together with another Hungarian, Liszt, — did his best to make Wagnerian music accepted in Europe. —- We bring a second instalment from Mrs. Jameson’s book, this time a description of a journey from Toronto to Niagara Falls 100 years ago. — There is an appreciation of the dog as men’s best friend, and we describe a few of the most prominent members of this family. A poem by Alexander FINTA and the Editor’s Notes to the Tragedy oj Man conclude this issue. * * * The Democratic Hungarian Movement of Canada. Canada is a democratic country; the Hungarians are freedomloving people; no wonder, that the Hungarian-born Canadians have a strong democratic organisation which was alive long before the war broke out but grew stronger when the world's freedom and the cause of democracy were threatened by Fascism. There is also a Free Hungary Movement which is in close cooperation with democratic Hungarian movements everywhere. The editor of the Tárogató is president of the latter and hon. president of the former. We stand behind Count Michael KÁROLYI, the former President of the Hungarian Republic, and regard him as the man who will be able to rescue Hungary from the claws of her feudal lords and bring happiness to her people. Károlyi’s desire to cooperate with Hungary’s neighbours makes him The man to secure peace in the Danubian Basin; a matter in which the whole of the world—including Canada—is vitally interested. ★ ★ ★ GOD SAVE THE KING.
