The family of plants collectively known as gourd is one of the oldest plant species used for horticultural purposes. These plants have been known and cultivated for over ten thousand years in their native Central and South America. They were brought to Europe after the discovery of America, and their production only became widespread after the 16th century. One of the most popular and must versatile varieties of gourd is the oil pumpkin, which was first used in Europe in the 18th century, and then gradually made its way to Russia, where it also became very popular. This variety likes a warm climate, tolerates drought very well and likes grainy, pH-neutral, limy, sandy type soils.
