The shellTess, so called Styrian oil pumpkin is con­sidered to be a mutation by experts, a variety that houses seeds, whose outer shell does not harden or thicken like the seeds of most other pumpkin varie­ties. The shell-less pumpkin seeds were not only used for human consumption and fodder production, but they were also a very important source of oil, clearly reflected in the plant’s name. The first glory days of oil pumpkin production date back to the 1930’s, but after the Second World War it lost its ground and cul­tivation only continued in smaller households, mostly because people depended on the oil their harnessed from the seeds. Pumpkin seed oil is a dark brownish green aro­matic plant oil, which has several extraordinarily beneficial physiological effects. Oil crushing is a tra­ditional activity in Austria, Slovenia, and in the Vend and Őrség regions of Hungary. Pumpkin seed oil has Oil press with a screw spindle. Magyar Néprajz III.
