been decorated with frescoes. Their presence was reported at the time of re-Catholicization in 1732. Since then the frescoes have been destroyed. The main ornament of the building is its Romanesque doorway in the south thought to be a work of the Ják workshop. A quite special Agnus Dei is depicted in the twelve-arc pediment above the entrance. The Agnus Dei symbolises the sacrifice of glorified Christ triumphant over death. The specialty of the stonework at Domonkosfa is that a lioness or pantheress rather than a lamb is holding the crucifix in the usual Agnus Dei pose. Most of the population of Domonkosfa are Lutheran. A spacious church of imposing looks was built for the Lutheran congregation at the beginning of the 20th century in 1902. The church was built in the Neo-Romanesque style designed by architect Lajos Kleiber. Several famous people are connected with Domonkosfa, some of whom will be mentioned here. István Szijjártó, Stevan Sijarto in Slovenian, a Lutheran minister, teacher and writer had been the teacher of the village until his death in 1833. István Szijjártó was born at around 1765 at a Slovenian village called Večeslavci today, close to the border with Styria. He Church in Domonkosfa from the period of Arpads. Photo: LKZ,2012. 10
