Megtanulható-e a kisebbségi nyelv az iskolában? IS IT POSSIBLE TO LEARN MINORITY LANGUAGE AT SCHOOL? Experience of a research conducted in a bilingual minority SCHOOL IN HUNGARY In this paper we would like to describe what bilingual education in practice means in a Hungarian Romanian bilingual minority school. The study is based on data collected in 2007. Nine teachers were interviewed orally using a questionnaire containing questions regarding the proportions of Romanian and Hungarian languages at school; methods; textbooks; problems with the bilingual education. The results show us that the bilingual methods used in this school neglect the following facts: (i) pupils’ minority linguistic background is connected to a dialectal variant of their minority language; (ii) pupils and their parents are bilinguals; (iii) pupils starts school or with less and less minority language knowledge or as Hungarian monolinguals. In this case, when a child has insufficient experience in listening and speaking the minority language, a strategy is needed. Bilingualism will flourish even in difficult circumstances when there is a plan of how, when and where a child will be exposed to both languages to ensure that both languages develop well. This plan, strategy and method in the studied bilingual minority school are not developed successfully. 193
