Kukán, F. : Late phacogenetic uveitis after extracapsular cataract operation. A special group of uveitis appeared after extracapsular cataract operations has been differentiated by the author (10 cases). As characteristic clinical feature is to be mentioned that the severe inflammation often concomitant with hypopyon appears relatively lately (1—3 years) after the operation and that cortical residues, transformed in white, cotton-like substance are found in great quantity only in a limited area, behind the iris. In bacteriological respect is to be noted that that from the after-cataract (in 9 cases out of 10) Gram-negative spore bacilli have been cultured, belonging into the genus of the aerobic mesophile spores. It points to allergic pathogenesis that although this microorganism is sensible to neomycin, erythromycin and Chloromycetin, the process is not healed by these antibiotics. Definite recovery, however, is obtained by the operative removal of the after-cataract. The allergic origin seems to he proved by a focal reaction produced by the endotoxin of the microorganism, and specific antibodies could be demonstrated. The lens proteins and the endotoxin of the microorganism act probably together as antigens. 282
