The Medieval Szeklers and Border Guarding (Abstract)

The present study investigates whether medieval Szeklers, besides their other military duties, had to guard the borders or not. The author of the study analyses all relevant sources referring to this subject. There are charters, which obviously allude to this type of obligation of the Szeklers, while others make indirect hints at the existence of such duties (e.g. through the field of activity of comes Siculorum). The existence of border guarding obligation is also supported by data from settlement history, e.g. the location of Szeklerland (Secuime/Székelyföld) or of the Szekler military bases outside Transylvania along the borders. Taking all these considerations into account, the study confutes those views (the most recent being that of József Kolumbán-Antal), which deny the border guarding obligation of medieval Szeklers. At the same time it also attempts the reconstruct the activity of the Szekler border guarding system.
