(Abstract) In the Middle Ages, the Szeklers were a Hungarian speaking ethnic group, who organized themselves apart from the communities around them, with specific autonomous institutions. Some scholars think that the Szeklers were transferred to the Eastern Carpatians to guard the Transilvanian frontier as ‘frontier guards’. This study try to prove that the Szeklers weren’t ‘frontier guards’, they were warriors with military obligations, well determined by documents. On the one hand, the military duty of the Szeklers was a general one; on the other hand, the frontier guards’ duty was a particular one and it was the consequence of military duty. 30
