SUMMARY

According to the most recent research, following the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy about 450 000 Hungarians fled to mutilated Hungary from the areas that had been annexed to the successor states. The aim of the present paper is to present the efforts of Debrecen, the seat of Hajdú

county,

to give shelter to its share of refugees. The task was anything but easy. The town leaders were hindered, among many other difficulties, by the lack of sufficient housing as a result of the war, by an empty treasury due to the Romanian occupation, and by the rigid position taken by the government with regard to the refugee problem. Thanks to the protracted negotiations between the town leadership and the state, the first small tenements at Debrecen had been constructed by 1924 only, and as a result many refugees still had to live in the wooden huts of the barrack settlements at the end of the decade.
