A Magyarság és más harciasán zsidóellenes sajtóorgánumok által hangoztatott narratíva, noha sokakhoz eljutott, és jut el azóta is szinte változatlan formában, ahhoz nem volt elég erős, hogy a két egyesület közti viszonyt érdemben befolyásolja a húszas években. Későbbi történetüket azonban alapjaiban határozta meg, amikor a róluk alkotta képeket máig hatóan elmélyítette a köztudatban.

The Emergence of the FTC-MTK Opposition and its Layers before 1926 By Bence Barát

SUMMARY

The paper explores the first three decades of the common history of those perennial rivals in Hungarian football, the Athletic Club of Ferencváros

(Ferencvárosi Torna Club, FTC) and the Club

of

Hungarian Athletes (Magyar

Testgyakorlók Köre, MTK), with

regard to the social, confessional, political, economic, sports-political and sports-intellectual aspects of their relationship. It aims to highlight the reasons that had transformed that relationship into mutual hatred, a process that has influenced Hungarian football in general, and the ways in which the self-perception of the two clubs has separated itself from the meanings attached to them by the public in the press. For, while it is a commonplace in sport-historical texts that the FTC was the “national-christian” club of the Horthy

regime, and the MTK was the “Jewish” team, the paper argues precisely that the identities of the two clubs and their mutual views of their chief rival by no means reflected this key narrative. Nevertheless, the “Jewishness” of the MTK and the „nationality” of the FTC have have exerted a profound influence on their later destinies.
