Accordingly, and in connection with the forthcoming edition of the correspondence, part of the present study summarises the observations and problems accumulated in the course of editing the letters, addressing issues such as, its features and varieties of genre, and the identification of its sources. It also maps the ways in which the texts of the letters have come down to posterity. The second part explores the further research possibilities offerred by the letters, with regard to the persons concerned, their social and institutional background, as well as the thematic structure of the information transmitted by them.
