ERDEI ÉS MOCSÁRI SERTÉSTARTÁS A SZERÉMSÉGBEN PIG KEEPING IN THE FORESTS AND MARSHES OF SREM (SERBIA) The Traditional Ecological Knowledge of Svinjars By Zsolt Molnár - Klára Szabados - Alen Kis- Jelena Marinkon - Marianna Biró - Kinga Ollerer - Dániel Babai - Krisztián Katona - Viktor Ulicsni - László Demeter SUMMARY The authors studied extensive pig keeping in forests and marshes, a historically widespread but nowadays almost extinct practice in Europe, but one with high potential in biofarming and conservation. The knowledge of pig keepers and the foraging of their pigs are sparsely documented. The authors explored the knowledge of traditional pig keepers (svinjars) about wild plants and animals, and pig foraging in the Sava-Bosut forest-marsh complex in Serbia. They conducted picture-based interviews, participatory fieldwork, and visual observation on pig foraging. The svinjars knew that the pigs consumed 98 plant and 42 animal taxa, and avoided 56 and 17, respectively. The seasonality of foraging was high, the pigs were omnivorous but choosy. The knowledge of the svinjars is a disappearing cultural heritage of European importance. 908
