HATÁRVÁLTOZÁS (OK) ÉS CSEMPÉSZET BORDER CHANGE(S) AND SMUGGLING Living along the Western Border of Hungary by Adrienn Nagy SUMMARY The paper focusses on the character of the national border as a means of division and isolation. It explores the ways in which in a network of border-changing events coordinated at a macro-level, the population of Vas county reacted to the transformation of the system of formal and informal relationships, to the presence of the border, and to the changes in the traditional uses of space. It also reconstructs the circumstances which, with the eruption of World War I, brought to life and maintained for nearly a decade illegal forms of commercial activity in the area. It likewise demonstrates the process whereby smuggling, always condemned by the laws, developed from a stigmatized and basically provisional practice into a long-term crossborder strategy that enjoyed communal consent, guaranteed a secure livelihood, and was even frequently supported by the authorities as well. 614
