A RENDSZERVÁLTÁS ÉS AZ AHHOZ VEZETŐ ÚT AZ ORSZÁGOS RENDEZŐ IRODA TÖRTÉNETÉBEN THE FALL OF COMMUNISM IN HUNGARY AND THE ROAD LEADING TO IT IN THE HISTORY OF THE NATIONAL OFFICE OF PRODUCTION (ORI) By Bence Csatári SUMMARY The National Office of Production (Hung. Országos Rendező Iroda) was a Communist Party establishment that officially monopolised the organisation of all pop and rock concerts in Hungary, although with declining efficiency, until the fall of the regime in 1990. It took part in the formation of the policy known as the „three Ts” (tiltott = forbidden, tűrt = tolerated, támogatott - supported), actively participated in the censorship of the pop music scene, while emerging as an agent of official cultural policy as well as a controller of the process of implanting socialist morals and influencing popular music trends. Gradually and partially deprived of its monopoly from 1982 and 1983, the ORI tried to increase its efficiency in order to thereby conserve its influence through minor concessions. The article seeks to answer the question of what trends, politico-social processes, and economic problems were encountered by the ORI, which necessarily tried to maintain its monopoly, and what steps led to its eventual dissolution by the Ministry of Education. 882
