Nem állítható azonban, hogy az említett esetekben az egyházfők célja politikai nyomásgyakorlás volt, törekvésük előterében sokkal inkább a kánoni választás szabályainak, illetve a pápai teljhatalomnak, a plenitudo potestatisnak az érvényesítése lehetett. THE PAPACY AND CANONICAL ELECTIONS IN THE HUNGARIAN CHURCH IN THE THIRTEENTH CENTURY By Gábor Barabás SUMMARY The paper explores the ways in which the emerging general regulation of canonical elections was put into effect in the Hungarian church from the late twelfth century. The most important issues addressed are the role played by the popes in the elections of archbishops and bishops in thirteenth-century Hungary; the extent to which the canonical regulations propagated by the papacy were put into effect there; and the circumstances under which the chapters turned to the Holy See in cases of disputed elections. Another key issue is an investigation of the King’s role in the selection and election of the individual archbishops and bishops, and whether this role led to any conflict between secular and ecclesiastical authority; as well as the definition of possible trends in such developments up to the end of the Árpád era, and their relationship to similar developments observable in other regions of the Christian West. 546
