that were perceived to be endangered at the time, and then to explain what role, if any, the different actors of the given period played in the securitization processes. This paper is engaged in this experiment while focusing on the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867 and the Age of Dualism in Hungary. The basic presumption is that as actors of security, the turn-of-the-century elites increasingly and typically declared themselves to be existentially threatened, and, therefore, to have a legitimate claim on surviving the challenges of modern times.
