Although the basic tendency is quite naturally for the higher levels of the hierarchy to offer more varied forms of industry and trade, in the case of some crafts one does find breaks, blank spots, and regional differences. These are most conspicuous in towns which are partial county seat sized. One of the reasons for this situation is most probably a break in the trend of the otherwise continuous growth of population in the hierarchy of urban settlements. The relatively high average presence of the various crafts and trades in the towns of the Great Hungarian Plain compared to the national index may by accounted for by the local composition of the population; however, the amount of workshops and markets per 1000 inhabitants, which lags behind the national average, shows that greater population did not necessarily go hand in hand with a stronger embeddedness of such professions. 352
