A DANIÉLOU-MISSZIÓ 724 THE DANIÉLOU MISSION by Miklós Zeidler SUMMARY The Peace Treaty of Trianon had to be ratified by all the signatories. The French House of Representatives asked Charles Daniélou to be the rapporteur of the bill. Daniélou had started his political career in the clerical right wing, but at the time of World War I was already one of the confidants of Aristide Briand. The Hungarian representation at Paris made efforts to win the support of Daniélou as early as September 1920. In October Daniélou undertook a two-week study trip to Hungary, where he met several political and economic leaders, as well as those of the national minorities, and made several visits to the countryside. He was constantly accompanied by the diplomat István Csáky, who prepared detailed reports about their travels and conversations. In his own report, completed in November, while criticizing some of the stipulations of the Peace Treaty of Trianon. Daniélou nevertheless proposed that it should receive parliamentary ratification. For some time, however, he continued to be reckoned in Hungarian governmental circles as one of the key figures in a potential Franco-Hungarian rapprochement.
