MINDSZENTY BÍBOROS ELSŐ AMERIKAI „HÁZIGAZDÁJA” 564 THE FIRST AMERICAN “HOST” OF JÓZSEF CARDINAL MINDSZENTY The Budapest Years of Chargé d’affaires Garret Ackerson, Jr. 1957–1961 by András Miklós Deák – Ádám Somorjai OSB SUMMARY In a period which was no more than the early and consequently critical period of the refuge, the U.S. diplomat Garret Ackerson, as the first American host of Jozsef Cardinal Mindszenty, accomplished pioneering work. During the three and a half years of his service as charge d'affaires he gradually forged the rules and thus paved the way for many of his successors in office. All of them gave home to a sufficiently regulated refuge with its rather strict ground rules applying to the Cardinal, includig his correspondence and visitiors. In 1958, after the aborted petition for Hungarian safe conduct, it became clear to U.S. diplomats that no automatic agreement could be hoped for between the Vatican and Cardinal Mindszenty. By taking advantage of his personal contacts in the Department of State, Ackerson also advised his fellow diplomats in Washington that they should do more in order to settle the delicate issue of the refuge.
