A LENGYEL HATÁS A DEMOKRATIKUS ELLENZÉK TEVÉKENYSÉGÉRE, 1980‒1981 428 POLISH INFLUENCE ON THE ACTIVITIES OF THE HUNGARIAN DEMOCRATIC OPPOSITION, 1980–1981 By Miklós Mitrovits SUMMARY The story of the formation of the Hungarian democratic opposition movement in the late 1970s is inseparable from that of the Polish opposition movement. The events in Poland – especially the foundation of the Solidarity union in 1980 – exerted a decisive influence on the thinking, activism and program of the Hungarian opposition. The paper explores the ways in which the Polish opposition impacted the emergence of the forums of a „second public” in Hungary (so-called free universities and samizdat), of street movements, solidarity action and program debates, and, finally, the first party foundations.
