THE DRAFT PARLIAMENTARY SPEECHES OF COUNT LAJOS BATTHYÁNY, 1839-1840 András Molnár (Abstract) When, during the parliament of 1839/1840, count Lajos Batthyány assumed the leadership of the magnate opposition then being formed in the upper chamber, his speeches and public appearances were greatly hindered by the fact that it was only in his adult years that he had learnt the native language of his country, and he had difficulties in expressing himself in Hungarian both in writing and speech. According to contemporary rumours, it was with the help of his secretaries that Batthyány translated into Hungarian and learnt his parliamentary speeches. So far, however, not a single original manuscript of his speeches has been known. The drafts which are published here may have been hidden and thus saved for posterity by Batthyány's wife, countess Antónia Zichy in January 1849, when the imperial authorities confiscated the majority of the documents belonging to the arrested prime minister. Among the drafts of the parliamentary speeches of Lajos Batthyány from the reform era, the original manuscripts by the count's hand of six speeches of various length have come down to us among the papers of countess Antónia Zichy. These have recently been discovered in the Central Archives of the Hungarian Province of the Piarist Order, in the legacy of Endre Friedreich OSP With the help of the historical notes of the historian Mihály Horváth, and of a thorough textual comparison and an analysis of subject-matter, the drafts could be identified with the speeches that Batthyány held at the parliament of 1839-1840. The text of four among the six drafts has been already known. One of them was published by the manuscript „Parliamentary Report" (Hung. Országgyűlési Tudósítás) by Ferenc Stuller, whereas the other three by the official diaries of the upper chamber. As for the remaining two, they can be identified as the drafts of the hitherto unknown parliamentary speeches which Batthyányi held on 21 September 1839. 75 Indító okára. 76 így!
