38 VONYÓ JÓZSEF The main conclusions of the study are thus as follow: (1) Gömbös, fai- from abandoning his racist views as prime minister, only decided, from tactical considerations, not to let them appeal- in his policies; (2) at several points his ideology shows close parallels with that of fascism and national socialism; (3) as a result, it is beyond doubt that Gömbös and his entourage, despite their tactical behaviour, aimed at a radical change as against the policies represented by István Bethlen and supported by the majority of the governing party in the House of Representatives. This ideology, constructed on racist foundations, which resembled the conception of state and society proclaimed by national socialism, but even more that of fascism, and, despite certain similarities, diverged fundamentally from the dominant ideology of the Bethlen-period, served the creation of a new national consciousness, of a new national identity.
