556 MOLNÁR ANDRÁS tapasztalata, legyőzhetetlen logikája és európai látókörű műveltsége egyaránt nélkülözhetetlen volt a polgári kormány számára. Deák jelenlétére és munkájára nemcsak belpolitikai szempontból, de diplomáciai megfontolásból is szüksége volt Batthyánynak. A bécsi udvar ugyanis Deákot tartotta a legtehetségesebb, politikai ellenfelei által is leginkább elismert magyar ellenzéki vezetőnek. A Batthyány Lajossal szinte teljesen azonos politikai meggyőződésű, ám az optimista grófhoz képest kifejezetten borúlátó Deák mindvégig a miniszterelnök bizalmasa, tanácsadója és szilárd támasza volt a Béccsel folytatott tárgyalások során, a minisztertanácsi üléseken és a pesti népképviseleti országgyűlésen, sőt nem egyszer helyettesítette is a távollévő kormányfőt. A kormánytagok közül Deák állt a legközelebb a miniszterelnökhöz, aki egyedül Deák tekintélye, közjogi tudása és higgadt bölcsessége előtt hajtott fejet.110 THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN COUNT LAJOS BATTHYÁNY AND FERENC DEÁK IN THE REFORM ERA by András Molnár (Summary) In the first part of our study we overview the years of formation and preparation of Batthyány and Deák from the scholar year 1819/20, which both of them spent at Győr, until 1839. In this parallel biographical sketch wc compare, in the search of similarities and differences, their family conditions and traditions, wealth and economic activity, as well as the roots of their political convictions and oppositional stance, the motivations of their public activity. In the second part we follow the story from the parliament of 1839/1840 to the spring of 1848, the formation of the Batthyány cabinet, by analysing the role of Batthyány and Deák at the head of the Hungarian liberal opposition, examining their common activities as well as their relationship to each other and to their contemporaries.
