Tanulmányok - Tóth Endre: István és Gizella miseruhája I/3

74 TÓTH ENDRE of art and miniatures in liturgical texts in which monarchs (Otto III and Henry II) are depicted as parts of the heavenly hierarchy. The ruling couple does not kneel in a humiliating position, which also shows the influence of Laudes regiae in the design of the chasuble. One must conclude, therefore, that the chasuble was not just a customary present from the ruler but the donation must have had a special reason. This is confirmed also by the date unique among liturgical textiles and goldsmiths' objects. The date embroidered on the cope is 1031, the thirtieth anniversary of the coronation of King Stephen I, so this must have been the reason for the donation. The texts and the iconographie characteristics of the cope indicate that the designer must have been a Benedictine monk, probably from Pannonhalma (St. Martinsberg), the first abbey in Hungary, who made use of Bavarian (Southern German) influences in iconography.
