28 MOLNÁR ANDRÁS all his authority, and did his best to canvass supporters and shareholders for them. A major shareholder himself, he greatly contributed to the finances of these social associations. This activity and readiness of sacrifice on Batthyány's part was more than the fulfilment of an obligation arising from his social status. He also wished to be popular and wished to set an example. His role in the associations was fruitful for both parties. The associations gained a solid financial basis, a higher social status, and greater political influence, while Batthyány was honoured even more and became better known also outside the circles of the aristrocracy. His extending relations and increased influence in society contributed to his becoming the leader of the whole Hungarian liberal opposition.
