Strada Mihai Viteazu
STRADA MIHAIVITEAZU • MIHAIVITEAZU UTCA • MIHAIVITEAZU STREET Mihai Viteazu Street The former Church Street, today Mihai Viteazu Street, led to the medieval church of Satu Mare, in the place of which the Protestant Church with Chains was built at the end of the 18th century. In the last part of the 19th century, the name of the street was changed to Rákóczi, as the family once owned a house here, located in the place of the post office building. In the interwar period and after World War II, the name of the street became Mihai Viteazu.Jhe buildings preserve their authentic aspect of the end of the 19th century and early 20th century, especially towards the intersection with Păcii (Peace) Square. Here can be found the majority of the buildings appreciated as historical monuments: The Kölcsey Ferenc High School, the buildings belonging to the Protestant Church (the church with Chains, the parish, the deanery and the former Protestant school for girls), the building of the Post Office, the Palace of Justice as well as the Austro-Hungarian Bank (now Satu Mare City Police Station). Yet, there are some further buildings of high historical and architectural value here. In the place of Victoria Cinema the building of Astra Cinema was constructed in 1935-1936. The cinema functioned in the interwar period. Next to this building the Fire Station was built in 1906 right near the Firemen's Tower. On the main fagade of the building there is a medallion with the coat of arm of Satu Mare city. The building of the Civil Casino was built in 1881. In the interwar period the Romanian Civil Club functioned here, while today this is Mioriţa Restaurant. On the other side of the street, near the Post Office, the Vasile Lucaciu City Conservatory of Music and Music Society functioned between the two World Wars, in a building which no longer exists today. Previously, in the late 19th century, the building housed a music school, too. 89
